How to Win a Sports Scholarship
by Penny Hastings and Todd D. Craven
Website: First Base Sports

I enjoy reading about the scholarship process. There are sooo.... many books on the process. The market justs seems flooded with misinformation. It gets harder and harder to find good material on how to obtain an athletic scholarship. Many atheletes and their parents opt for the recruiting website and shell out over a thousand dollars to get their names out to the right colleges. What is the best way? I still don't have the answer. Can this book help? Sure, it can. Is it the book to end all books? I don't think that such a book exists. There are no guarantees for anyone to gain an athletic scholarship. However, the book offers some common sense approaches that can help you, the athlete, as well as the parent to get started in the right direction.

Below is chapter by chapter listing of the book. Each chapter offers information in an easy to read format.

  • Chapter 1: Let Your Athletic Talent Take You to College
  • Chapter 2: You Don't Have to Be a Superstar to Win a Sports Scholarship
  • Chapter 3: Athletic Scholarships
  • Chapter 4: Assessing Your Athletic Potential: Do You Have What It Takes?
  • Chapter 5: How Athletics and Academics Go Hand in Hand in Winning a Sports Scholarship
  • Chapter 6: The Process Begins
  • Chapter 7: How to Identify the Academic and Athletic Programs Best Suited to You
  • Chapter 8: How to Build Your Sports Resume Kit(TM)
  • Chapter 9: Recruiting Etiquette: Dealing with College Coaches to Increase Your Chances of Being Chosen
  • Chapter 10: Becoming Your Own Sports Agent: What to Do When a Coach Is Interested
  • Chapter 11: Know the Rules: Illegal Recruiting Can Cost You!
  • Chapter 12: College Scholarships and Other Financial Aid
  • Chapter 13: Women in Sports: Golden Opportunities for Female Athletes
  • Chapter 14: The Transition to College Athletics
The first 5 chapters offers some history and statistics for volume of scholarships, types of scholarships, and asks some good self evaluating questions. Yes, everyone seems to think they about what it takes. However, a good self evaluation never hurt anyone. A quick 16 question run down will help to put some perspective on what exactly it is you are after as well as what your real options are. You can't sell yourself without knowing yourself. I like the self evaluation.

I like Chapter 6, The Process Begins. It offers a year by year planning checklist to guide you to the right people at the right time. You can't get yourself ready too soon. Brief outlines for your sophomore, junior, and senior years are offered as well as a planning timeline. These outlines are by no means original. However, they are written for you. They are concise and to the point and they offer not only athletic but academic recommendations as well.

Chapter 7, How to Identify the Academic and Athletic Programs Best Suited to You, identifies and displays sample contact letters, palyer profile sheets, and information request sheets. Everyone has an idea of what needs to be shown and the samples in this book demonstrate the type of material necessary. The sample sheets are concise and offer the right type of information.

I particularly enjoyed Chapter 8, How to Build Your Sports Resume Kit®. The book offers the following suggestion for your Sports Resume Kit®:

  • Cover Letter
  • Sports Resume
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Offer to provide sports video
  • Upcoming game/sporting event schedule
  • Copies of newspaper clippings, awards
  • Picture of yourself (optional)

Yeah, yeah, I know so what makes this so different from anything anyone else has ever shown you or you have heard about. Well for one thing, the price of the book is $19.95. I don't think you can go wrong with the information in this chapter alone. This brief 18 page chapter provides the necessary samples to get you the athlete, or parent, on the right track. I don't know how many different forms and samples that I have seen. However, the sample sports resume that First Base Sports offers is thorough. Remember, academic information is just as important and the book does a good job of reminding you of just that.

The rest of the book looks at presenting yourself and other opportunities offered to get yourself to a college future that you looking for. You need to remember that not everyone is a Division I athlete. The book reminds the reader of this. It also reminds you to not sell yourself short. There are colleges out there that are looking for an athlete just like you. You just have to find the college. Because, more than likely, the college does not even know that you exist. A harsh reality for many of today's athletes.

You need to keep some perspective as you read through the book. It introduces information to you as if you have never done any of this before. So, you should treat the book in a similar fashion. This book is a nice minimum investment if you are looking for information on the scholarship process and evaluation tools and sample forms to introduce yourself, or your student athlete, to the college scholarship process. It sure can't hurt to read this one!
