Atlantic Sharks poised for run...
Daytona Beach, Florida. posted 1/30/2005 4:59:03 PM.

Along the sandy shores of Daytona Beach, the community is rallying their support among one of Central Florida's hottest boys' basketball teams. The Atlantic High School Sharks are riding a 14 game win streak into the final two weeks of the regular season. Circling the waters with an 18-2 record, the Sharks are preparing to battle for the District 7-4A Title. Already clinching the number one seed in the district, the Sharks are focusing their efforts to reach the pinnacle of high school hoops, the State Finals in Lakeland. The Sharks, hosts of this year's district tournament, are an impressive 15-0 at home this season, and look to add to that streak in the weeks to come.

Over the course of this championship caliber season, the Sharks have amassed a strong resume for success leading into the state playoffs. A number of highlights abound for Atlantic, but their Championship Title Run in the 15th Annual Sunshine Classic netted the Sharks an opportunity to gain a glimpse of what it is like to compete against some of the nation's finest boys' teams, as they were able to knock off top ten teams from New York and Tennessee, en route to their second title in tourney history.

In only his second season at the helm of the Atlantic program, in Port Orange, head coach Brian Morris has assembled a mass of believers in achieving their maximum potential. Leading the Shark Attack are seniors Jon Matthews, Bobby Holtgrewe, Markuee Tolliver, Ryan Rapolti, and junior Oseremi Odu. Matthews, Holtgrewe and Tolliver have proven to be not only an extremely formidable task for opposing teams from the perimeter, but also in the quick transition game of the Sharks. Rapolti, standing tall at 6'7, has already set four school records this season; charges taken in a game, season, and career, as well as 11 blocked shots in a game. He is complimented underneath by hard-nosed, junior defender Odu, who is also knocking on the door of the Atlantic defensive record book. A deep bench of players to supplement the Atlantic Arsenal consists of seniors, Brian Starkey, Sean Foster, Eric Jenkins, Jimmy Reaves; juniors, Rashad Hall, Angel Aramayo; and sophomore Marcus McDonald.

With a talented Junior Varsity squad, eclipsing their school record setting season of a year ago, and completing a championship run this past week in the Volusia County Invitational at Deland, the Atlantic Sharks are poised to continue their winning ways deep into this year's March Madness and beyond.
