Travel Team Preview: Team Breakdown
Posted, 3/18/2005 8:02:02 PM

By Rick Staudt

As a team unsponsored by a shoe company, Team Breakdown built quite an impressive resume: 2000 Spiece champions, 2002 runner-up at Rumble in the Bronx, 2003 final four at Super Showcase with a split squad of only six players. Last year, after becoming the flagship program for Reebok in Florida, the team finished second at the Big Time event in Las Vegas. Kenny Gillion, leader of Team Breakdown, expects the success to continue.

"We return 5 players from last season and have surrounded them with size, versatility, and youth", says Omari Forts, who has joined the coaching staff.

"We should be just as successful, if not moreso, as last year", says Kenny Gillion.

Their tentative roster is as follows:

  • Edwin Rios - 2007 - 6'1 PG - Miami Sr.: Electrifying player that can get shots for himself and for others. Top 5 player in his class nationally.
  • Jonathan Hall - 2006 - 6'5 WF - Miami Sr.: Known as "Whop", he is strong and athletic with a versatile game. Equally adept from behind the arc or attacking the rim.
  • Dwayne Collins - 2006 - 6'8 WF/PF - Miami Sr.: Long-armed and athletic, this former post player is making a transition to the wing, ala Miami signee Adrian Thomas, for his final travel season.
  • Princeton "Dante" Curry - 2006 6'5 - WG/PG - Poinciana: Multi-dimensional guard with the ball-handling ability of a point and the scoring prowess of a wing.
  • Derek Duggins - 2006 - 6'4 WF - Tampa Freedom: A terror in transition, Duggins is young for his class and still growing.
  • Ken Moore - 2006 - 6'6 WF - Tallahassee Lincoln: An inside/outside performer, Moore has a solid body and is comfortable in the post and on the wing.
  • Max Groebe - 2007 - 6'5 WG - Miami Chaminade-Madonna: Recently named to the German 18U National team, Groebe specializes in draining 3 pointers, but his strong body allows him to help on the boards.
  • Larry Jackson - 2007 - 6'5 WF - West Gadsden: Raw athlete averaged a double-double this past high school season.
  • Dave Minaya - 2007 - 6'5 WF - Tampa Oldsmar Christian: Young sophomore is a great shooter but also effective inside.
  • Miguel Paul - 2008 - 6'1 PG - Lakeland Kathleen: Leading scorer for 23-3 team as a freshman.
  • Rayford Shipman - 2008 - 6'3 WG - Miami Pace: Skilled athlete started for state semi-finalist.
  • Xiangdre "Bo" Reliford - 2008 - 6'6 PF - Miami Pace: Good size, strength, and athleticism for a freshman.
  • Kenny Boynton - 2009 PG/WG - Ft. Lauderdale North Broward Prep: Could become the best player ever out of Broward County by the time he graduates. Played with 17U last year!
