|Travel Team Preview: Jacksonville Lee Bulls|
|Posted, 3/26/2005 10:03:08 PM|
By Rick Staudt
After many successful years on the travel team circuit as an independent, the Jacksonville Lee Bulls are now part of the Reebok family. Traditionally a power in Florida but little known outside the state, the 2005 edition of the Bulls looks for that to change.
"One thing that separates us from other programs in the state is that we have strong teams in the groups below the 17s", says Coach Ryan Delafield. "These guys have been playing together for quite awhile and they have developed very good chemistry between them."
This year's team will be anchored by 6'2 point guard London Warren of Jacksonville (FL) Raines. Joining him in the backcourt will be 6'2 combo guard Brendan Walker from Jacksonville (FL) Bishop Kenny, 6'1 combo guard Gabriel Charley from Jacksonville (FL) First Coast, Chris Meriweather, a 6'3 swingman from Jacksonville (FL) Arlington Country Day School, Tim Shankle, a 6'0 combo guard from Gainesville (FL) Eastside, 6'0 combo guard Gary Neavins of Jacksonville (FL) Ribault, and 6'3 swingman Dwane Joshua from Jacksonville (FL) Forrest.
"All of our perimeter players are very versatile", states Delafield. "Warren is a great athlete at the point guard position with great ballhandling skills. Walker is a shooter and point guard rolled into one. Gabriel Charley is one of the better players in the class of 2007. He shoots and handles the ball very well. Meriweather is our best defender on the wing. Shankle is a rock solid floor leader and defender. Neavins may be the best shooter in Jacksonville after Walker and Joshua is an athletic wing that can get to the basket and bury the open shot."
The interior will feature 7'3 Jason Bennett of Jacksonville (FL) Arlington Country Day School, 2007 combo forward Anthony "AJ" Stewart of Jacksonville (FL) Arlington Country Day School and 6'9 power forward Ray Doucette of Jacksonville (FL) Wolfson. Joining them will be 6'6 combo forward Aaron Bowling of Crescent City (FL) and 6'7 power forward Ronald Douglas of Jacksonville (FL) First Coast.
"Our coaching staff feels that our post play will be as solid as it has been in some time", says Delafield. "Jason Bennett is back with us and is a tremendous shot blocker and developing offensively in the low post. AJ Stewart is one of the best in the class of 2007. He is very long, athletic, can play in the post , and hit the medium range jumper. Doucette has a great wingspan and is a very aggressive shot blocker. Aaron Bowling will bowl you over with his athleticism and ability to play inside or out. Ronald Douglas is a strong rebounder and shot blocker."
The Lee Bulls will take on a strong schedule and participate in events with a great deal of competition. Their tentative schedule is as follows:
- March 25-27: Disney Easter Classic, Orlando
- April 15-17: Real Deal on the Hill, Arkansas
- May 13-15: Travel Basketball Championships, Gainesville
- May 27-29: Tournament of Champions, North Carolina
- June 17-19: Big Bend Shootout, Tallahassee
- July 13-16: Breakdown Hoops Festival, Miami
